Mofizul Islam from Social Determinants of Health and Related Inequalities: Confusion and Implications

“Now an unprecedented opportunity exists to improve health on a global scale—particularly for underprivileged subgroups of the community. We should endeavor to eliminate the existing ambiguities and confusions and let this current momentum of social determinants of health guide our public policy.”

Lab Mission

Our mission is to assess, measure, and understand how non-biological factors impact influence:

  1. Access to Neurologic Care

  2. Cause Neurologic Disease

  3. Lead to Variations in Neurologic Disease Outcomes.

Using datasets, interviews, focus groups, and other methods, we seek to understand differences in access and outcomes in neurology across various groups, with the goal to develop interventions that improve access to neurological care, prevent neurologic disease, and improves the quality of life and outcomes of patients affected by neurological diseases.

Lab Focus

Currently, the lab is studying Huntington’s Disease in vulnerable communities.  We are studying how various groups affected by this neurogenetic condition access care, differences in outcomes, and exploring ways to improve their access to and participation in clinical research. By understanding these factors, we hope to draft interventions at an individual, provider, and health system level that improve access and quality of care for patients with Huntington’s Disease.
